In Flux

In Flux is a proposal for a structure in New Berlin, Pennsylvania, USA. The structure underwent numerous drastic programmatic changes in the last century. Originally built as a church, it was converted into a community center, then later a yoga studio. After the murder of the studio’s yogi, the structure became a crime scene for a homicide. In 2018, the church was put up for sale and zoned for housing. In spirit of the structure’s ever-changing use, this proposal wanted to create a space that is constantly adapting to accommodate various programs of work and leisure. Lightweight slabs are suspended from the roof by steel cables, allowing the space to be subdivided vertically, while the moveable cotton cables on tracks subdivide the space in plan. Various spaces can flow into one another or be separated entirely depending on the position of the cables. The cables allow the space to feel open and grand while also providing a sense of privacy when needed.
